Locomotion/ Movement
Platypus
A platypus moves on four webbed feet that help them to swim. The webbing is more important on the front feet and is folded back when they walk on land. Each foot has five toes, and they do not have hair on them. On a male platypus, there are spurs on their hind feet. They connect to poison glands and are used as defensive weapons and can kill small animals. The legs spread out to the side of the body, giving it a lizard-like walk.
Echidnas
Echidnas legs are short and the feet are adapted for fast digging, with long and strong claws. The claws on the hind feet curve backwards to allow for grooming between the spines. The digging ability of echidnas allows them to escape from predators by digging straight down, so that only a few spines are visible above ground. The feet are spread outwards like a reptile.
